Become a candidate
Do you want to become a candidate to represent the interests of the citizens in your community and to advocate for their rights?
Choosing a position
In municipal elections, there are two types of positions: the position of mayor and the positions of councillor. Since the Municipality is divided into districts, each councillor position is associated with a specific territory identified by a number. You must choose the position you wish to run for before submitting your candidacy. You cannot run for multiple positions at the same time.
Eligibility requirements
To run as a candidate, you must be entitled to be registered on the municipality’s electoral list. However, you do not need to actually be registered on the electoral list.
You must therefore meet the following criteria on election day:
- Be 18 years of age or older;
- Have Canadian citizenship;
- Not have lost your electoral rights.
You must also meet one of the following two conditions on election day:
- Have your domicile within the municipality’s territory and have lived in Québec for at least 6 months;
- Be the owner of a property or occupy a place of business located within the municipality’s territory for at least 45 days.
In addition, when submitting your nomination paper, you must reside within the municipality’s territory.
